22nd March 2008
The Church Service was emotional for former members
and a proud moment for the Group returning to St Barnabas
Church the place of the 53rd's birth.
After the service the 253 Group accompanied us with their
band on a march from the Church to our present day
location. Once at the Scout Hut we started the Meetings.
All Cubs and Scouts had to pass through 9 stalls run by
former members teaching Scouting skills in a fun way.
At 5.30pm the meeting ended and the Camp Fire started with
songs and sketches followed by presentations from former
members to the Group and also to Cubs and Scouts.
While all this was going on our Present Parents Committee
was working hard preparing the food which was enjoyed by all
at the end of the Camp Fire. The evening finished at 10.00pm.
23rd March 2008
The family hike down the Caledonian Falls was a very
relaxing event both for Parents and the Leaders. There was
a stop at the falls for a short snack and then on to Platres
where we had a nice meal at the Petite Place Hotel. Finally
we returned back to Limassol at 7.30pm.
Monday 24th March
The evening of 24th of March was upon us, time for the
highlight of the 50th Anniversary events - the Celebration
Dinner Dance, held at the Kanika Pantheon Hotel in Limassol.
Many members took part in the Lantern March beforehand
and went straight from there to the hotel.

The tables were all decorated with 50th year flags and an adjoining room contained a great display of 53rd memorabilia –
display stands, photo albums, flags and loads more – including a kayak…ask Akela about that! There was also a sales table
manned by the young leaders, thanks girls!
The hotel provided an excellent buffet, which we enjoyed whilst listening to music from the DJ. There was also a continuous
slide show of photos of all sorts of 53rd activities.
The meal was followed by speeches and presentations. The Cyprus Scouting Association awarded the Bronze Mouflon to Ben
Whelan, the Order of Merit to Stephanie & Peter and Friends of Scouting to Alexia and Clare. Stephanie was also presented
with her Republic Award. Then the 53rd made their own presentations of 50th Anniversary glass plaques and thank you pins to
people who have helped the group in a wide variety of ways.
The formalities over, the disco got into full swing and both old and young danced the night away. There’s a lot of dancing talent
in the 53rd!
Around 160 people attended this event – current members and their parents and friends and past members – some from
overseas. I had a great time, as did my three girls. Thank you to Richard and all the leaders and everyone who helped make
this event such a success.
