53rd Helping in the Community
Beach cleaning
On Sunday, the 1st of July 07, the district had organized beach
cleaning from the beach opposite the zoo till just past the Enaerio
area. There was quite a good turn out of Cubs, Scouts and
Explorer Scouts. Walking on the bicycle path the Cubs and Scouts
picked up every little bit of rubbish they could see and put it in their
bin bags. Half way there our groups Chairman bought us all ice
creams that were left over from the fete. It was then that we met the
Mayor who congratulated us on helping. After showing the Cubs
who the Mayor was we all crowded round him and posed for a
picture! Finally at 11am we finished at the Holiday Inn Hotel.
Beach Cleaning with the
Mayor of Limassol.
A successful finish to the Re-cycling Project.
The project that started in January 2007 has
finished. In total the Explorers managed to raise
£200 from recycling of Cans. A donation of £400
from the Hobson family in memory of Kenneth
Hobson, who supported their cause, was
presented to the Explorers at the Christmas
Dance on the 8th Dec. This brought the total to
£600 which was enough for two Morphology
Mattresses from Procopiou Medi Shop who also
gave a good discount to help our cause.
Finally on Sunday 9th Dec the Explorers
presented the two mattresses to the Cyprus
Cancer Association and Freinds.

Beach Cleaning for The Day of the Sea
On Sunday 28th September 2008 Cubs , Scouts and Explorers
from the 53rd took part in the beach cleaning that started the
Celebrations for The Day of the Sea. At 10.00am they were
supplied with gloves and bags and started cleaning the beach
opposite the Public Gardens and headed east toward Enaerios.
They managed to fill quite a few bags and found most of the
rubbish was cigarette butts.
They then returned to the start where drinks were waiting for them
and a Local Camera crew interviewed some of our Scouts.
Overall it was a very successful Event of the 53rd.

Volunteer Work at the Happy Valley Stables 3rd Oct 2009.
Today we went to the stables to do our service to the community. We had to be
at the scout hut at 9 but we didn't leave until quarter past. We got to the stables
at around 9:30 and put in our groups to clean the horse manure out of the
stables into the wheel barrows, which went straight to the huge pile of
manure!! After about 2 hours we had a little break and drank some water. Then
4 of us had to go and double check the stables to see if theres no more poo
there while the rest of us cleaned the hay that was all over the floor. When we
had finished we fed the horses apples that a lady who owned one of them, left
for us. At the end of it all, our parents came to pick some of us up while the rest
of us went back to the scout hut. Overall it was a really exciting experience, and
I had so much fun that i named the white horse Blondie, after me!!

A lot of Community Service.
In total over two months, April and May 2010, the group participated
in 7 Community Service events. Right and below are the events.
These activities are very important for the 53rd and the Limassol
Scouting District and is a way to get more support and publicity for
Scouting and hopefully open some doors in the Community.

Hike around Prastio Village 1st May 2012.
On Tuesday 1st May Explorers and Scouts went up to Prastio
Village to take part in a small hike of 2Km up to one of their view
points. The hike was organised by the Village community to pass
on the history of the area to the younger generation. The 53rd has
a special bond with Prastio Village as we use the Village School
as a Camp site for some of our hikes in the area. The hike
started at 9.30am and by 10.30am the hikers were at the view
point looking at the amazing scenery of Yermasoyia Dam below.
During the hike the Mayor of Prastio would stop and tell a story
about the area or pin point other landmarks. There was a small
stop to rehydrate and then back down 2km to the finish.

St Barnabas Church Fete 1st May 2012.
The Cubs successfully ran three stalls, the buzzer, kick the ball through
the clown and the rings, at the May day fete on Tuesday 1st May in the
Church grounds. Those who took part also had time to go around the
other stalls and help, which was greatly appreciated by the Church
Community. Well done to all our Cubs, good job, you did us proud.

Beach Clean with Turtle watch 12th May 2012.
On Saturday the 12th of May, a group of explorers met up in the car park next to
St Ermogenis church and taverna. We arrived there at 9 am and waited for the
safety briefing and instructions on what to do. There were some t-shirts on sale
to support the event and Skip looked really pleased with the one that he bought!
Two of the people in charge, were giving an introduction about safety and being
careful about what we picked up. We took a group photo with the other volunteers
and we were off! We all piled into the back of a truck and drove to Curium beach.
We were all given gloves and large rubbish bags. We walked down the stony
part of the beach collecting any litter that we found.
We continued doing this for 2 and a half hours and eventually drove back to the taverna
where a lovely buffet awaited us...
Just before we began eating, we went into St Ermogenis Church, which was really
beautiful with all the icons and the sentimental story of St Ermogenis. We went back
into the taverna and filled our plates with delicious traditional food such as zanziki,
chicken souvla, meatballs, sliced pork and potatoes. We were all starving by this point
and enjoyed sitting in the shade of the breezy restaurant. Although, everyone felt
tired and hot, we all felt it a well spent and enjoyable day.

Turtle watch 16th and 23rd June 2012
We met up at the Orphanides car park at 6:30 ready for turtle watch. When all
explorers with their parents had gathered, we started our caravan with cars
towards Tunnel beach. Linda from the turtle watch met us at the beach and she
explained how Tunnel beach is searched for the nest. After a few quick tips on
how to find the nests and how the tracks look like, we started our walk. We
begun our walk on the right side of the beach, sadly we didn’t find any nest
there. So we continued on the left side of the beach instead. On that side of the
beach we were in luck, we found tracks from turtles. The tracks was so hard hid
that even some explorers walked right past it! The tracts were only tracks with no
nest. We continued our walk with our eyes open, we saw another track! This
time it was a successful laid nest! (The eggs are predicted to hatch in 42 days
so hopefully we can see the turtles when they hatch.) We also learned from
Linda how the turtle watch place a cage just over the nest to protect it. She also
taught us signs that we can use in order to help us know if there is a nest or just
tracks. We continued our trip along the beach but unable to find any new nest.
The turtle watch was a successful trip as we found a nest and it was well worth
the early morning.

the Church Community. Well done to all our Cubs and Scouts who took part.
