53rd St Barnabas Scout Group
Thinking Day
A Proud Weekend for the 53rd.
This year the Group had a very busy Thinking Day
weekend 22nd Feb 2009. For the first time since
1993 the 53rd had their Cub, Scout and Explorer
Meetings in the original Scout hut ( now the
Church Hall ) next to the St Barnabas Church. It
was nice to see the flag pole that former
Explorers made back in the 80's used, now
portable thanks to Andreas. After the meetings
came our Thinking Day Church Service with the
high light the unveiling of the Stain Glass Window.
Akela had worked hard organising the service and over seeing the making of the Window we were donating to the
Church. This would have not been possible without the help of Rev Rod and Pamela.
The window was designed by George and Jessica I and made by John in the record time of two months.
Its is a great honour for the Group to become part of the history of St Barnabs Church the place of the 53rd's birth 51 years
ago.

Left is the Artists drawing of the picture George
and Jessica had made for the window. This
drawing became the template for John so he
could make the parts. The three Scouts around
the camp fire image was taken from Jessica,
Christianna and Georges modeling to the right.
When we were all asked to design a stain glass window for
St Barnabas church, George and myself went home and
started to draw pictures of what scouting meant to us. After
we had come up with a list of pictures we had to try and put
them all together, so with the help of our dad we decided to
theme the three different panes of glass. The first being
Religion in Scouting, the second World Scouting and the
third scouting for us.
In the religion window we put St George who is the patron saint for scouts, set in front of a hill with three
crosses where Jesus was crucified for us reminding us that God gave his only son to us and who died for us.
In the second, World scouting window you see the world scout emblem. The plumes of the fleur-de-lis are
the symbols for service to others, Duty to God and Country, and obedience to the Scout Law. These three
principles form the Scout Promise which is made by new Scouts as they join the movement. This is
encircled by a rope which is in the colours of the 53rd Necker tied at the bottom with a Reef knot. The rope
is there to symbolize the family of the world Scout movement and the knot symbolizes the strength of the
unity of the World Scout movement. Below that is the Scouting Moto Be Prepared also the initials of Baden
Powell BP. At the bottom you will see the Scout sign which has the same meaning as the fleur-de-lis with
the Cubs and Scouts flags at either side.
The third window scouting for us, Is about the fun things we do at scouts like camping, camp fires and
being with our friends, where we get the chance to learn new skills.
All three window are surrounded with the Scout Promise which we learn and live by.

Thinking Day Service 20th February 2010.
Once again the Group had the Cub and Scout Meetings in the old Scout Hut as part of Thinking Day before the Church
service. It brought back memories seeing Cubs and Scouts playing their games in the Church grounds. The theme of the
meetings had puzzles and stories about Lord Baden Powell and his adventures. After the meeting the Group filled the
Church for our Thinking Day Service which saw Scouts taking an active part which they had prepared for with the help of
Chaplain Derek and Hawkeye ( Chris ).

Thinking Day 2011
On Saturday 19th February as is tradition the 53rd returned to St Barnabas Church where the
old scout hut still stands. Cubs and Scouts carried out their meeting just like in the old times
using the church hall and grounds for activities and fun and games. To mark Thinking Day
the Cubs and Scouts then held a ceremony in the church led by Canon Rev Derek Smith.
Scouts helped throughout the service by reading prayers anda reading from the bible. All
past and present members of the scouting association were invited to renew their promise
this is something all Cubs and Scouts all over the World will be doing during the coming
week. During the service leaders gathered around the stained glass window which the 53rd
presented to the church 3 years ago whilst the Rev Derek dedicated it to the church,
confirming the special bond between the 53rd and St Barnabas church.
At the end of the service the members of the troop returned to the scout hut to close the
meeting with a very special event. 3 Cubs and 5 Scouts were invested in the old scout
meeting hall. The last time a member of the troop made their investiture to become a Scout
or Cub in this hall was 20 years ago.
This service also holds special meaning as it is the 53rd year of the 53rd scout troop. All
members were given a special badge to mark this occasion which should be sewn on the
flap of the right-hand breast pocket.
