53rd St Barnabas Scout Group
Cub Program Summer Camp Platania 2007
On Friday the 27th of July the 53rd Scout Group arrived at the scout hut at 7.30am. After loading all the
equipment onto a lorry we headed of to Platania Campsite. In the bus there was lots of exciting chattering
for the Cubs and Scouts as the Leaders and Explorer Scouts braced themselves for the week ahead!
At our arrival at the campsite the Cubs got the tour around. We showed them where the toilets were,
where they would eat, the campfire and more or less everything they needed to know. Once they had been
assigned to were they were going to sleep (Boys in a room and girls in two tents) they started making
their boundaries and two gates to go around the two tents. After eating our lunch they successfully
completed them. The next thing on the program was preparing for the traditional campfire we have with all
the other troops. After dinner we met up with the Scouts and went to the campfire.
Most of the Cubs were so tired they barely made through the whole campfire! Finally at around 9.30pm we
sent them to brush there teeth and go to bed. We survived the first day!
Day 3
Come on wake up! Your going to see your mummy’s and daddy’s today! Lots to do before then though. And first up
is exercise!!! Hup 2 3 4! Come on! After breakfast, Inspection and Flag Break cleaning the area around the front of
their tents was the main “event” of the day. Finally at around 11am parents started arriving. It was funny to watch
some children’s reactions to their parents arrival…other ran into there parents arms and others just sat there! Most
of the Cubs and Scouts left the campsite for different places, some to the picnic area just down the road and others
to Limassol. At 4pm they all arrived back at the campsite! They had game time and we played Milo and Baseball
and a variety of other games until dinner time. After they had eaten and relaxed a bit they played the Wide Game with
the Scouts. After catching the Leaders and visa versa they all fell into a happy sleep!
Day 2
Rise and Shine! Wakey wakey! Its 6.30am aren’t you use to this time?! That’s the wake up call the Cubs got from
Mastou on the Saturday morning for there exercise! Inspection was due after breakfast so all the Cubs started
cleaning there rooms and tents and were outside their tents at around 8.15am. Once they had been inspected we
walked up for Flag Break. The first task of the day was to start their pioneering. Between them they managed to
make three shoe racks, two mug stands and three rubbish bins. The Cubs then had a chance to go on the scouts
Ariel runway which they all enjoyed. After lunch they had the hike to the waterfall which hey had all been waiting for.
Me, Akela, Mastou and Mariefi (???) hiked up with the cubs. On our arrival most of them ran under the waterfall.
When we finally got back they all showered and had dinner.
Later that evening Farid had the task of inventing a game (Rebound), Olivia had to create a poster and Nader and
Alex P had to learn the basics of Looking Yourself and Road Safety. The Second Star Cubs then had to run Farid's
game. The game was a great success and everyone including the Scouts, Ventures and Leaders had a good
laugh! After all this the Cubs collapsed into their beds into deep sleeps!
Day 4
Come on people! Wakey wakey! We got duty this morning! The Cubs had the task of setting the
tables for all the Cubs for breakfast that were on the camp. They did it very well and had finished
preparing by around 7.15am. After they had all eaten they cleaned up the Cubs Breakfast room.
Once they had finished with the help of some Scouts they got ready for Inspection and Flag Break.
Once everyone had changed and relaxed a bit the Cubs that were doing the Campers Badge went
up to the Flag Break area and pitch tents and the World C Badge had to sit and observe a square
meter area for an hour for insects. I know it sounds boring but it was actually very interesting how
many insects went through there area! Once they had finished everything they had a treasure hunt
which included having to find 20 various items. After lunch and relaxing time the Explorers Badge
went on a 5km hike which they all completed successfully. The First and Second Stars went
across the road with Skip and Laura to the Trout Farm. When they returned one of there
requirements was Country and Cultures which meant they had to go and socialize with the other
Cubs from other troops. When everyone had returned from the hike they all showered and after
they had eaten had free time in which we played the Wide Game. They then all slowly made there
way to bed…They made the 4th day as well!
Day 5
Everyone wake up! Come on! As usual the Cub Scouts started there day
with some nice wake up exercising! Once they had all come jogging back
they went into the normal routine of eating breakfast, Inspection and Flag
Break. Today, those who were doing the Explorers Badge had to go and
build a simple shelter. Mastou took them up to where the Scouts were
sleeping and began helping them with ideas and process of them. The rest
of them went with me and Stephanie and practiced there knots. They were
VERY successful in this category and by lunch time they had learnt the clove
hitch, reef knot (two ways), sheet bend, sheep shank, highwayman’s hitch,
square lashing, bow line and the diagonal lashing. At 11.30ish the World C
badge went and learnt about the different plants and wildlife on camp etc.
After lunch the Cubs had the chance to relax till 3pm. Once they were done
the Explorers Badge had to make stretchers and carry there “victim” 500m.
Then they had to cook backwards style (Wondering what that is?! Ask your
kids!) The rest of the Cubs, who were all Second Star, had to learn about
two sports, football and volleyball. After they had eaten dinner they had the
chance to relax until bedtime. Day 5 in the Big Brother camp over!
Day 6
Right you should all automatically wake up now! As usual the Cubs
went running up for their exercise and breakfast. The only difference
today was that we were having a special Flag Break at the flag pole
near to where the Scouts were camping. The Second Star Cubs had
made a prayer in honor of 100 years of scouting. Next up was a hike
to Platania were we would hopefully be meeting the Scouts on there
return from their camp. The Cubs split into three teams…the World C
Badge went ahead with Mastou and to observe the mouflons and the
other two groups went with me and Akela to follow tracking signs that
Kypros and Little Anna set out.  When we arrived at Platania Picnic
area we met up with Scouts and had a special Flag break in the little
shelter. There we all got on parade and renewed our promise as
many Scouts all around the world were doing on the same day 1st
August. Once this had finished the Cubs had the chance to challenge
the Leaders to an assault course. Of course we won! On our return
we stopped of at the forest station and looked at the fire engines.
When we returned they ate ( beans today ) and then at 3.00pm the
Cubs cooked a simple meal around the camp fire and collected fire
wood for the 53rd Party.  The 53rd Party  was after dinner which the
Cubs seemed to enjoy eating Pitza cooked in the 53rd Camp Oven.
At around 10pm they were put too bed! Day 6 completed!
Day 7
Come on Cubs wakey wakey! After going through the usual routine of
Breakfast, Inspection and Flag Break they had the task of building an
obstacle course. They built it with great success and they all got very
wet! Fastest was James with less than a minute! Well done! Once
they had eaten and relaxed a bit me and little Anna started filling
water balloons for there water fight. We walked up to the old campfire
area and had a huge water fight with the girls (booooo!) VS boys
(woohoo!) ,with me helping the boys and Akela helping the girls. They
then took it upon themselves to wet me and held me down so they
could wet me! I must admit it was good fun! They then had showers
and got ready for the campfire. They sang loud and proud and didn’t
fall asleep this time. At 10pm they were sent to bed complaining it
was the last day! Haha! Day 7 in the Big Brother camp over!

Last day on Camp
This years camp was a great success, all our targets were met.  We had enough leaders to run separate cub and
scout programs.  Well done to Akela, Bagheera, Mastou and Shere Khan(Tracey) for keeping the cub scouts motivated.
It's taken two years to build a cub pack and for  the first time six cubs managed to get their second star, four of which
have the chance of getting the Leaping Wolf before they join the scouts, this in itself is a great achievement.
On the left is a photo of the cubs holding their badges and stars which they gained on camp.  In total 15 campers
badges, 10 explorer badges, five world conservation badges, six second stars and four first star badges were passed.
