53rd St Barnabas Scout Group
St Georges Day Nicosia 7th May 2011.
This year's St Georges Day celebrations started from Friday 6th May. Three Explorers from the 53rd together with Skip
loaded our Chairman's truck and started the long journey to Nicosia with Steph and Chris in the mini van.
The three day camp called Amphektonia started at 5.00pm in the moat of the Nicosia wall behind the Famagusta Gate,
the venue for the St Georges Day Celebrations by the Cyprus Scouting Association.
In total 150 Explorers were present for the camp from all over Cyprus. Each District built a Camp area and Projects. The
53rd's project was the main gate of the camp which we built with the help from the 81st and 246th Groups. That night our
Explorers started the Camp fire, which was attended by the Mayor of Nicosia, with songs we had learnt from KISC. It had
been a long day and at 1.00am finally it was lights out.'
On Sunday 8th May all Explorer dismantled the Camp. They moved the
53rd Gate to a new location for better photos. Andreas once again came
and at 12.30pm all equipment was loaded on his truck and was on the
way back to Limassol. Thanks to all that helped on this activity, especially
out three Explorers, Katy , George and Christian, who worked real hard
over the three days. Well done.

On Saturday 7th May our Explorers carried on their Program, also
finding time to look around the old town of Nicosia, and were ready at
4.30pm waiting for the rest of our Group.
Back in Limassol the 53rd Cubs and Scouts started their long day at
10.00am. Leaving from the Scout Hut by bus, the first stop was the
Neolithic settlement of Choirokoitia. After a good look around the
ruins and the rebuilt ancient houses it was back on the bus. The next
stop was the Athalasia Park in Nicosia. Here our Cubs and Scouts
had free time to look around the park, feed the ducks and fish and
play in the play ground. At 1.30pm all sat down for lunch.
It was back on the bus at 2.30pm, destination the wall of Nicosia.
Once at the wall the Group started walking to the Famagusta Gate.
On the way they had a quick stop and photo at the Statue of liberty.
Skip was waiting at the Gate to join the Group. In the Gate there was
a Photo exhibition and our Cubs and Scouts had a good look around.
There was quite a few pictures of the 53rd. At 4.00pm the Cubs and
Scouts headed back to the bus to meet with our Explorers and get
ready for the Parade.
The Parade started at 5.30pm and ended in the moat where the
Explorers were Camping. The St Georges day celebrations lasted
about an hour and a half. The Cubs and Scouts then quickly left to get
on the bus and leave for Limassol with a stop for Dinner.
Skip and Steph stayed in Nicosia and represented the 53rd at the
official Dinner at the Hilton Hotel while our three Explorers played at
the Concert back at the Famagusta Gate. Overall it was a very tiring
day but enjoyed by all.
