Summer Camp Platania 14th - 21st July 2006
53rd St Barnabas Scout Group
On Friday 14th July we left the scout hut at around 9.00
a.m. by bus and headed for the scout camp at
Platania.Once at the camp we unloaded all our
equipment and started setting up the camp site. By
the end of the first day the cubs had finished their
gates and area and the scouts had only made a start
on the tower, the table and their camp gadgets.
At night both cubs and scouts took part in the
traditional first night camp fire together with the 253
Ayios Yiannis and 280 Episkopi groups.
On Saturday 15th July the scouts
managed to finish the tower, the table
and clear an area by the river setting
up the camouflage net for a seating area
with a table. In the afternoon both cubs
and scouts hiked to the waterfalls and
had melon at the falls. On the way back
the cubs had a mini boat race with boats
that they had made earlier
That night both cubs and scouts played a
wide game before turning in for the night.
On Sunday 16th July the cubs and scouts
awoke at 6.30 a.m. did their exercises,
something they did every morning, and got
the campsite ready for the parents visit at
10.00 a.m. After the parents visit the cubs
and scouts played baseball and that night
looked at the stars through the telescope.
On Monday morning the scouts went on a 7
kilometer hike from Platania campsite to
Spilia village where they cut across the
mountain to the mouflon sanctuary at
Platania forest station.
They observed the mouflon and then had a
break at the café near the picnic area
before returning back to the campsite.
Whilst the scout were on their hike the
cubs with Eros and Anna made moulds
of footprints by the river by using
polyfiller. They then took a closer look at
insects using magnifying glasses and
tried to record their findings. They also
did work towards their badges which
they were to be tested on later during the
camp.
On Monday afternoon the scouts
prepared water balloons and went to the
old camp fire place about 500m away.
There they separated into 2 teams and
built forts before starting their water
fights. After the water fights they cleared
up the area and returned back to camp
for their showers. After dinner they
learned how to use and axe and a saw.
On Monday afternoon the cubs lite fires
and cooked hamburgers and toasted
bread to make hamburger sandwiches,
which they all ate and enjoyed maybe
due to the fact that todays lunch was
beans!
After dinner they collected leaves from
the surrounding trees and made a leaf
diary which they were given to take home
On Tuesday the 53rd was on duty. So the
cubs had to set up breakfast for all 120
campers and then had to clear away and
wash up. The scouts had to do lunch and
dinner. We were also responsible to keep
the campsite clean which we did setting
a trend for the rest of the camp .
That morning the cubs and scouts built
and obstacle course and the children ran
the course being timed.
.It was good fun as well as running the
course the venture scouts threw buckets
of water at them. They then got their
revenge whilst Dalia had her turn at
running the course. In the afternoon the
scouts had a three a side football match
and the cubs had a chance to work on
their badges.
Cubs and scouts then went to find wood
for the 53rd campfire party.
On Tuesday night we had the traditional
53rd party as a reward for our excellent
duty day work. Supplies were brought
up from Limassol and not only did
Stephanie the scout leader manage to
join us but we also had a visit from 2 old
scouts Timothy and Martin. We sang
traditional campfire songs and played
games. .
During the camp both cubs and scouts
played various games in their free time.
One of the most popular games was
Uno. We had a troop competition of Uno
and Guillaume was the winner. He won
a packed of mini mars bars which he
kindly shared with all his fellow scouts.
On Wednesday the cubs went on a hike
to visit to Platania forest station. Once
there they played in the play area and
then went across to see the mouflons.
They then returned to the play area for a
treasure hunt which was set up by Anna
and Eros. Afterwards they went to the
forest station and saw the fire engines
and the fire warning board which they
use. They then enjoyed a break at the
café where they had a rest and a drink
before heading back.
In the afternoon the cubs took advantage
of the scout fire and cooked
marshmellows for a treat before making
their bow and arrows which they used to
try and hit the balloon which the scouts
had missed.
That night the cubs played a wide game
which they seemed to enjoy very much
as they had no scouts to catch them

On Wednesday morning the scouts
built bivowacs out of green plastic
sheeting taking care not to damage
the environment.
After lunch we bought trout from the
trout farm opposite the campsite and
each scout was given one to prepare
and cook over an open fire. At first
they were not so keen to try it but once
they tasted the cooked fish they were
impressed. They then made bow and
arrows and tried to hit balloons for
target practice.
Since the program was going
smoothly we accepted an invitation
from the 280 group to take part in their
afternoon program which was a
game of 'Deal' Emilios was chosen
on the last game and sold out his box
for an ice-cream.
The scouts then went on a night hike
to the waterfalls and returned to their
bivowacs where they spent the night.

Thursday morning the cubs went to visit
the trout farm where they saw how the
trout grow in the different tanks. They
were given food to feed the bigger trout
which they enjoyed doing very much.
They then finished off their badge work
by learning the country code and how a
compass works and also cleaning the
campsite area for the campers badge.
Whilst the scouts were taking down the
campsite the cubs were given a choice
of what they wanted to do this is called
Cubs Own. They all chose to have a
water balloon fights like the scouts had
2 days previously. Mathew and Katie
were also up at the camp visiting and
helped the cubs to prepare the
balloons and joined in with the fun of
the fight.
Thursday morning the scouts finished off
their requirements for the campers and
pioneering badge which they had to finish
by 12.30 p.m. After lunch scouts had to
take down the campsite for both their area
and the cubs They brought all the
equipment to one place ready to be loaded
onto the truck next morning. All the
equipment was sorted and cleaned ready
to be packed away once they returned to
Limassol.
That night it was the traditional last night campfire for all 120 cubs
and scouts. The 53rd sung songs and did sketches with the help of
Martin and Timothy who came again for the last night.
The next morning all the cubs and scouts were awarded the badges
which they had achieved during the camp.
Overall this was a very enjoyable and successful camp and our
three venture scouts worked very hard in supporting the leaders
during the seven days.
